Sun's NC03Q3 was fun (http://www.sun.com/bignews/nc03q3/); in particular, what Jonathan Schwartz presented was pretty impressive. I don't know whether Sun will success in near future, but I strongly believe that kind of technology that Sun presented in the event will be the future of IT.
To highlight the presentation, two things really impressed me and I thought "This is so cool!"
1. Truly networked desktop environment. So what you do is just to stick your card (Java card in this case) in your desktop; the screen comes up and that's your desktop. Email, calendaring and what have you are just there. The card authenticates you and it will bring you your interface. It is truly networked, so you can just take your card out and go wherever you like; you stick your card there and the screen comes up. Your company's office, home office, doesn't matter where you are.
2. 3D desktop. I don't call Windows crappy, but if you think about, it has not improved much fundamentally for the last 10 years so. 2D UI, icons, etc. 3D desktop demonstrated creates a virtual 3D world inside your monitor; you can move around applications in 3D world, the world that has depth. The color, the shade, it creates pretty amazing look. If you are on broadband, you've got to see this (http://www.sun.com/bignews/nc03q3/). Again, I don't know if Sun is the one who will bring the environment to us. Maybe it will be Microsoft, maybe IBM, who knows? New Microsoft will bring us the environment, but whoever will do that, it will be really exciting.
