I'm sure some of you have seen the (glass ceiling) lawsuit. Wal-mart has had some problems in the past with their male manager having meetings at strip clubs and now this. I was of the opinion that most companies put these kind of issues behind them years ago. Wal-mart recently ran a few TV ads praising their female management which I assumed was a reactive move from the previous case until I saw this lawsuit appear a few weeks after.

This is an issue that several of you have or will discuss in b-school and it might be interesting to discuss following any action in the courts if it makes it that far.

It can be assumed that there are some people that are gender bias when deciding on compensation. Now for the big BUT! But there is one issue that always disturbs me when statistics come out saying someone's group (male/female) earns more money. Who asks for more money? I think you'll find that men are more likely to ask for raises. Or atleast your OB teachers will pound this fact into your head. :)

I'm probably not going too far out on a limb and saying that Wal-mart has a few problems with distibuting compensation. They are one of the worlds largest employers so there are bound to be some problems. I do see a problem with large class action lawsuits that are aimed basically at getting a mutimillion dollar settlement. But I'm getting off topic.

Has anyone encountered problems like this at work? What do you think about this issue and what would you have done if you felt you were being undercompensated?

Kind of hard to say; 1. I don't know too much about this case and 2. I only worked for software companies in the past, and employees are predominantly male. To this day, most of CS/EE graduates are male, so I don't know where we need to start debating ...
