It looks like Yahoo! is trying to counter Google mail by offering mail accounts for 2GB of mail (paid) and 100MB (free). Now call me crazy but who needs 2 gigs of mail storage.

Exactly. I simply delete old emails in my inbox and restore the space on Yahoo mail.
I love Yahoo's upgraded service. No GMail service needed. Thank you very much.

For those of us who transfer huge files around, its great..... As well as for yet another way of remote backups via email attachments...... Although I don't think that was the intention. Perhaps mpegs are yet another possibility.

If you are transfering huge files email is not the way to do it. A much better medium is ftp. I usually set my mail accounts to reject large files and several ISPs do the same.

True, and we do resort to that... but then we loose the tracking that email provides....

However, if you have a solution I'm all ears!!!

I believe the problem is mail servers aren't ment to send large files through email protocol. You end up degrading the performance of the server. I'm not sure with the exact technicalities but I have always been told if a file is large ftp it. You can log ftp transfers and most ftp software will do this.

If your sending files to people within your company then there are other solutions like Microsoft's Small Business Server that lets you set up a remote intranet site with the ability to run exchange, upload files for checkout and so on. I've set this up a few times. Its pretty slick.

Or you can telnet files between servers :D

Fact of the matter is, most people don't know the difference between mail and ftp. Telnet? It probably sounds like Hebrew to most people. I wonder if people start sending rather large files again, as Yahoo and Hotmail start offering pretty big disk space.

Hotmail are also increasing their diskspace to 250 MB.

Google will win this one hands down IMO.

AOL are joining the party as well. (http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/jRuU0daeY3OX9C/AOL-Debuts-Free-E-Mail-as-Portal-Push-Nears.xhtml)

I'm happy with my gmail acct though....but they could add folders and group contacts...but it's free and I don't get anywhere near the spam I did with yahoo.

It all depends on the individual, I'm a big Google fan so my Gmail account is the second most popular account I use. I love the threaded features and the fact that my fraternity chapter's distribution list utilizes Google Groups keeps me there. I also have a Yahoo! account, but I almost never touch it. It was actually rated the best webmail service by PC Magazine (well... who actually cares about their reviews?) followed by a close Gmail. Hotmail is strictly for my spam mail. Now that AOL/AIM is offering 2gigs, I've taken a look at it once, but I haven't found the need to use it yet.

I think people will soon start to resent Google, now that they have won the search engine war and are using their pockets to essentially do what Microsoft has been doing for ages. Who will Google buy next?

As for the large email accounts, they are a network admins nightmare. Trust me on this one. Some people refuse to delete any email. When you need to run nightly backups this becomes a major problem. Exchange servers have some issues with large mailboxes still. I'm hoping the next release of Exchange server addresses this or removes the EDB in favor of a MDF SQL database.

Well, concerning resentement for google....i personally don't think that it'll happen. My reason for this is that, google have proven to produce technically sound and good products. now looking at it from the technical sense (for the techies in the house) microsoft products are more of....fine on the outside but bad on the inside. thats y technical people still prefer using linux compared with the lay-man. the same as google...they are giving us products that have AWESOME technical ingenuity and back-end. (making techies love it) and also simple to use products (making the lay-man to love it too).
For instance, in the case of the AJAX technology used for the gmail. its impressive. this was the main reason i drop yahoo and the rest.
SO i don't mind if they swallow up others...for now...LOL.

Right now...their most amazing product is the GOOGLE BASE!!! u need to experience it to know what i'm talking about.
