Any AMD fun here? Apparently, AMD's sales went up 73%! 73%! That's a big number. Here are articles related.

The rise in sales has a lot to do with the 32/64 bit chips which they didn't have last year. Last year they were still trying to fight the mhz war with intel and were using the cheasy PR rating that I think backfired. With the new 64 bit chips they might gain ground on the server market (and maybe some ground on home desktops) but I think they are losing ground on the mobile market where Intel has capitalized with its pentium M chips.

That's a very good point. Also they have x86 compatible chip(right?), so it is attracting a lot of customers, since many people are still looking for a solution that does not require them to spend too much money upfront. I don't think Intel's Itanium was terrible in terms of its technology, but the timing was probably the worst. Not many people are wanting to migrate to a new architecture now ...

Itanium had a lot of problem. Probably why it got nicknamed Itanic. Their 32 bit chips were probably just as fast at 1/10th of the price. Itanium's design allowed for a lot of potential benefits for the server market. The ability to string more processors together and use more ram in high end servers for instance.

Timing was also bad in terms of software. Intel had some linux support but no real support from MS. AMD's chips are coming out alongside windows 64 beta.

Loyal AMD user here. Their CPU is cheaper compared to Intel so that is my only reason to choose AMD for desktop. I would choose Intel chips for a notebook though.

I have 3 Intel machines right now. 1.5 Pentium M laptop, 2.4 Pentium 4 HT Server, and a dual 1.0EB Pentium III workstation. I would probably buy an AMD for a workstation but I'd still be hesitant on a lappy because of heat and power issues. AMD has become a quality company.
