I currently work for a large computer services/outsourcing company. Most of my work is technical and technical lead in nature. I decided to get my MBA in hopes of moving into more of a project manager role.

My dream job would be to find a strategic mgmt position in a small to medium size high-growth company. I basically want to have my hand in everything from writing the business plan to marketing to securing financing.

I am now close to graduating and am getting somewhat impatient. My question is.....has anyone else tried to find work on a part-time basis (evenings & weekends) for maybe startup in order to get that dream position? I'm curious as to how you marketed yourself and also how you approached companies regarding employment. I would be willing to take a low wage in order to get the experience.

So far I am thinking of drafting a cover letter basically stating what I wrote above and contacting the company through email, or selling myself over the phone....although I have not tried either one yet.

Any experiences or thoughts would be appreciated.

There is certainly nothing wrong with your intentions. I'd encourage you to find an independent consultant/mentor and indicate to this individual that you are willing to work cheap to gain some experience while you finish your degree. You can also approach some small consulting and CPA firms. The final route I see is to find a very small business that is willing to give you a shot reviewing business plans, etc.

Neither of these paths are easily traveled as your lack of availability during the weekdays and your qualifications are two pretty big strikes against you.

Best of luck though!

I am Seeking Assistance Writing Business Plan.

I am seeking somoene to develop a team of consultants who will help start up entrepreneurs develop their business plans.

The work would be nights and weekends mostly as most entrepreneurs involved in a start up have a job currently and are working on their dream after work and on the weekend.

I also have been considering the idea to utilize MBAs who want to earn some extra money or I was thinking we could recruit MBA grad students who could use the income while in school.

You should try and get a consulting gig w/ a big 4 accounting firm
Grant Thornton - works on middle market accounts - and you could have "your hand in everything" as you mentioned

Take care
