Hello all,
I was impressed by the quality of posts here by such qualified people. I started thinking about applying for an MBA a few months ago. I have an undergrad in Computer Science with a 3.6 GPA(scale of 4.0) from a State University (CA). While I was completing undergrad, I worked full time in the mortgage industry (market was really booming here), so I continued my job. I feel that was a big mistake, since now I am at cross roads again and want a financially rewarding career that is more challenging. I am 31 years old and am leaning towards an MBA in Accounting with plans to obtain a CPA certification. I do not plan to go to a top school, my family obligations will not allow me to invest the money and time that is required to do so. However, I am getting really excited about my future plans and this degree. I plan to take up temp jobs to expose my self to different facets of accounting while going to school, so I have a better chance of finding a job. I would really appreciate advice and input from those of you in the Accounting field, if obtaining this degree would help me break in this career.
Thank you so much in advance.
Why an MBA instead of an MAcc or a MSc in Accounting?

HI Mike,
I wanted to pursue MBA because I want to learn about leadership/management as well as basics of Accounting. I feel that a business degree would give me the confidence to start my own business in the years to come.
Please feel free to comment.
Thank you so much for your response.

Hi I am pondering a career change, firstly let me give you guys my background, Im 24 and graduated BS Entrepreneurial Management, and got a gpa of 2.0 ( i studied in the philippines so the grading system for my university is different , rather than 4 being the highest , 1 is the highest in ours and 3 is considered passing, with 3.5 and above considered failing ) During my time in the university , my thesis was to run my own business, i ran a franchise of an automotive servicing business, similar to that of Midas ( ran that for 1 year graduated last year may 06 ) , after that i was production manager in my fathers garments manufacturing business (did that for 10 months until feb 2007 ) from feb until today im running my automotive business again.
Now im pondering of getting an mba ( i dont know what type of mba and to get and from which universities - i was considering a mba/jd but its too long - 3 years .... and im not sure what kind of jobs will i get and what starting salary i can get from that ) also i am thinking of a career change ( i am thinking of getting into something like consulting / public relations / marketing / advertising / media )
Now i am also wondering what kind of jobs i can get based on my experience and possible mba course that i may take and what would the starting salary be , im aware that different fields have different requirements, and different salary offerings , not to mention that individual companies have their own differences as well.
any advice would be greatly appreciated

i have another question that i want to post .... similar to my cry for help on career change .... if i do decide to go for an mba .... would the school really matter ? i was looking around .... and some schools caught my eye, like in canada .... schulitch ( not sure if that is spelled right ) has an international mba ... which seems awesome , and rotman seems to have a good mba program , considering that 80% of their graduates get jobs that is paying a median of $ 80,000 ( canadian dollars i assume.... i got this from their site ) the problem is this .... i look at these universities in the west their fees are around .... $ 25 - 40k tution fees, and and estimated $ 60 - 80k for cost of living .... bringing it to more than a $100k for my mba ..... is it worth it ? i found this place in the philippines where i live called ' Asian Institute of Management ' for the price of around $24k and on some sites it is ranked as a top business school to get an mba ..... and it makes it cheaper for me since , i live in the philippines , my cost of living is a minimum..... what do you guys recommend ?
