When will Linux become a major player in desktop PC market?

We see many companies including RedHat, Suse and IBM making effort to adapt Linux in desktop, but will they succeed? Competing against Microsoft Windows in this arena is some heavy duty. What do you think?

Linux is still not that user friendly. Gaming and multimedia support still isn't there.

Redhat dropped their user version and are now only working on their enterprise server edition. Distros like debian and gentoo will never be mainstream. Suse sold out of the free distro business a long time ago. Unless you want that evil known as United Linux, that leaves mandrake as the last big company offering a free version.

Well I'm only partially correct on the redhat assumption. Redhat's user linux is now Fedora linux and can be found here http://fedora.redhat.com

They kind of made a big change in a short amount of time.

I still don't think it will make mainstream. Atleast not for a long time and the end product would look nothing like the linux we know today.
