I'm facing a catch-22 situation. An MBA requires relevant "managerial" experience but to get into the roles that give the required experience requires an MBA.

I am currently working as a developer in an IT services company and my long term goal is to work in business development. Having defined points A and B how do I chart the course in between?

The obvious choice seems to be to climb the ladder one annual appraisal cycle at a time and get project management experience and then knock on the doors of a business school.

Any guidance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Project management is a great way to move up the ladder. Make sure to highlight projects that you directed on your resume. There are several other ways into management and leadership positions. You can always contribute to volunteer causes, or should I even mention run for a city office. :)

Philip, Thanks for the reply.

Are there any books about the MBA experience that you would suggest to someone like me who's getting his feet wet?

There are a bunch of MBA blogs at Blogger that might give you some insite on people's MBA journies. Get ready for a good laugh too. Blogs are full of useless drivel.

You can alway start a new thread and ask our members about their experiences. As for books, I don't know of any off hand.
