Some of you may be interested in whats going on over at http://mozilla.org

If you don't know what mozilla is, its simple. It is an open source organization that has created the core technology behind the netscape browser. They also have their own version of this browser (Mozilla 1.4) which remains more up to date and has always been much smoother running than netscape. The mozilla browser includes all of the bells and whistles. Web Browser, email client, irc chat client, html editor, and so on.

They have been working on Firebird for some time. The Firebird core is eventually going to replace Mozilla's current gecko core and be integrated into the mozilla package. The current Firebird is a stand alone browser that runs significatnly faster than Internet Explorer 6 and I beleive faster than Opera as well. It handles HTML standards better than IE6 and its constantly updated and improved. For those who hate popups, Firebird blocks them all. It is a very stable browser and worth your time to check out.

Mozilla has also been working on a new email client. I just installed it today so I havent had time to mess with all of the bells and whistles and its an early release but I must say it is something to look forward to.

All of these products are free to download and use. Check them out at

I have Opera, and I kind of like it. Mozilla is pretty nice, too, but personally I was never impressed or amused by its performance or features. On platforms like Linux, Mozilla is THE browser, but I don't know if it can penetrate the browser market on Windows platform.

Despite what Microsoft did, at the end of day, I think Netscape did not work hard enough to keep its position in the browser market, but it's still pretty unfortunate that Microsoft pretty much destroyed the market. Not much innovation is taking place in the browser arena right now...
