Hi there,

I am a recent Psychology and Business Studies (Marketing) graduate and am seeking a job as a Marketing Analyst or Market Researcher. My educational background pretty much qualifies me for Marketing Research positions as the ads often specify Social Science or Marketing Degrees, but to become an actual Market Analyst, they often ask for Commerce, Marketing, or Business degrees instead. The irony is that during my Psychology degree, we did quite a lot of Statistics and just to be clear, i think i should tell you that my Undergraduate = Psychology and my Post-Graduate = Business Studies (Marketing).

Anyhow, i am considering further studies in Economics or Econometrics to increase my chances of gaining an Analyst position, but can't decide which would be look better on my resume? At this stage, i am leaning towards Economics, because i can still do some Econometrics subjects, the only difference is it will say Economics on my resume rather than Econometrics.

Some quick background information: I am a mature-aged student with a background in hospitality, direct mailing, a little bit of marketing, and currently have a part-time business development and administration role that consists of cold-calling, drafting business to business letters, devising small marketing campaigns, building and maintaining databases, and some adminstration duties. I have had this position for the passed 6 years and also work as a Research Assistant for the Psychology Department of the University i attended.

Last year i applied for about 14 jobs, and got 3 calls back. Each company invited me for an interview and i even got a job offer from one of them, but i declined for personal reasons.

Now i am in with the rest of the graduates, applying for jobs. My concern is that i may be percieved by recruiters as being "over-qualified" for "entry level" or "graduate" positions, due to my age and/or experience. I get constant knock-backs from ads asking for Business or Marketing degrees, dispite knowing that i have the skills they require and was in the top 5% of my business subjects at University, and even gained the highest and second highest grades on some occasions.

My questions specifically are:

1. What sort of education are hiring managers looking for in Marketing Analysts? And will a Graduate Diploma in Economics help me?

2. How do i market myself as a "graduate"; bearing in mind that i am older than most of them?

Any opinions would be appreciated.

PS. I know this is an MBA forum, but i do not have anywhere else to go. If somebody could suggest a marketing forum, that would be great ;)

Thanks in advance...

1. If your looking to be an analyst then I think a good hiring manager would look at your stats background. They will probably ask you what software you know (SAS, SPSS, SQL, etc) and what you have experience doing in the classroom and more importantly the real world.
2. Being 27, I haven't been in this position so I can't really answer this but if I were in your shoes I might try to look at it as continuing education rather than fresh graduate. You may be newer to the field but you bring a lot of experience to the table.
